This lot is from the Yandaro coffee washing station, the source of our Burundi single-origin offering for four of the past five seasons. For every pound we purchase, we contribute the Kahawatu Foundation to support a livestock program in the community.
Burundi is home to an ancient pastoralist tradition in which cattle are a mark of distinction. For Burundi’s cattle herders, driving cows to the river in Kayanza was once an affair that could last several days. On the bank of one river in Kayanza Province, some of the herdsmen began building makeshift shelters where they could rest before returning to their communities. They called their temporary structures indaro, a generic Kirundi word for lodging. Over time, the temporary settlement gave way to a permanent one, and the temporary name indaro gave way to a more permanent one, Yandaro.
Greenco’s coffee washing station (CWS) there is consistently the source of the cleanest, sweetest coffees we have tasted from anywhere in Burundi. We are delighted to feature a lot from Yandaro again this season in our single-origin Burundi Karyenda — the fourth time in the past five years we have done so.
